A.R.M.S. Benefit Concert - 12/03/1983 - Cow Palace - San Francisco, CA
Photos from the A.R.M.S. Benefit Concert on December 3, 1983 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, CA. A.R.M.S. stood for Action Research into Multiple Sclerosis. MS is a debilitating muscle disease that afflicted legendary Faces bassist Ronnie Lane, for whom the benefit concert was formed. Unfortunately Ronnie Lane passed away on

The show included such musical greats as guitarists Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton (also on vocals), and Andy Fairweather-Low, bassist Bill Wyman, drummers Kenney Jones, Charlie Watts, and Simon Phillips, along with percussionist Ray Cooper, vocalist Joe Cocker, and keyboardist/vocalist Steve Winwood. For its day, and pretty much since then, this was "the" rock superevent to see. Something to note is that Page, Beck, and Clapton had all been members of The Yardbirds at one time or another. This was the first time ever that all three Yarrdbirds guitarists had performed together on one stage. To top it off, each guitarist gave his own inerpretational, unique guitar solo during an extended version of the then-classic (and much overplayed on radio) "Stairway To Heaven" (from Page's band Led Zeppelin). This is one of those shows whose memory has fallen by the wayside, but deserves its proper mention and memory. It wasn't only a chance to see so many living legends at their prime, all collaborating and performing together, but it was for a great cause to help erradicate an all too often seen disease.
