SLY & THE FAMILY STONE - 07/07/2007 - Summerfest - Arena Green Park - San Jose, CA
Sly Stone has always been alternately one of the most talented, and most mysterious artists of the past 40 years. His musical abilities might only be eclipsed by his reclusiveness, and apparent inability to make sense of his life, at least when discussing it with others (which he rarely does). It's always frustrating to fans when an artist is so talented, and yet cannot seem to put out or convey his creations. None the less, it was arguably a rare treat to see Sly reunite with the Family Stone (albeit with newer members) on Sat., July 7, 2007, at the Arena Green Park in San Jose, CA for the "Back In The Day" Summerfest. Along with Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart), the band consisted of two other original Family Stone alumni - Jerry Martini on saxophone, and Cynthia Robinson on trumpet. The rest of the band was rounded out by vocalists (and Sly's little sister) Vet Stone (Vaetta Stewart), (Sly's niece) Lisa Stone, "Elva" Tyne Mouton, and Skyler Jett, along with saxophonist Pat Rizzo, guitarist Wilton Rabb (from Graham Central Station), keyboardist Jimmy McKinney, bassist Eric Young (from Con Funk Shun), trumpeter Ashley Duval, and saxophonist Alphonso "A.G." Guillory (from Buddy Miles, Buddy Guy, and John Lee Hooker). Apparently no one wishes to mention who the drummer was. Opening the show was Scottish funk group, Average White Band.

Sly Stone leaving backstage after blaming police for cutting the show short - meanwhile, the police were standing next to me wondering why he stopped. They had actually taken bets to see if he was mentally and physically able to even finish the set.
